“Is this really good for my lungs?” I get questions like this all the time when it comes to essential oils in the diffuser.
Especially when it comes to children, sensitive people or health issues, many people are initially unsure:
“Is the fine mist from the diffuser really safe?”
I understand these concerns – and that’s exactly why I have intensively studied the recommendations and guidelines surrounding the use of essential oils.
According to the German Society for Hematology and Medical Oncology (DGHO), essential oils in diluted form are generally considered safe. The US FDA also classifies many of them as “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS).
However, as with everything in nature, there are a few things to bear in mind: Very sensitive skin or prolonged use directly on the skin can rarely cause irritation.
– Citrus oils can have a phototoxic effect on the skin in combination with sunlight.
– And if you have certain health conditions (e.g. hormone-dependent diseases or asthma), you should be particularly careful or seek medical advice.
Another source, the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), emphasizes in an older assessment that accidental ingestion – especially in young children – can lead to health problems. However, such cases are rare and are usually due to improper use.
What does this mean for everyday life with your diffuser?
✅ Use high-quality, all-natural oils.
✅ Less is more – 3 to 5 drops are often enough.
✅ Make sure the room is well ventilated and observe how you or your family react to it.
✅ If you are unsure, have previous illnesses or small children, it is better to ask more questions or get a personal assessment.
Essential oils are powerful plant companions – if used consciously and correctly, they can enrich your everyday life without being overpowering.
