Brain fog – when your head is in a fog

Do you know this too? You’re sitting in front of your laptop, wanting to get something important done – but your brain feels like absorbent cotton. Your thoughts are tough, it takes you forever to find the words, you constantly lose the thread or simply can’t concentrate. Even simple tasks suddenly become difficult and little things regularly disappear from your memory.

I feel the same way all the time – and sometimes my husband doubts my sanity when I ask for the third time where the car keys are or what we were actually planning to do tonight.

I used to think it was just normal. After all, I juggle a lot of things at the same time: family, business, to-do lists, everyday life. It’s clear that the brain switches to energy-saving mode at some point, right?

But brain fog is not a new normality. It’s a warning sign. A sign from your body that it needs support – physically, emotionally and mentally.

What is behind the feeling of being “beside yourself”?

Brain fog is not a clearly defined medical term, but many women over 40 – especially in the pre-menopause or menopause – report precisely these symptoms: mental exhaustion, concentration problems, forgetfulness, listlessness. The causes can be very diverse and often interact with each other:

  • Hormonal changes: Fluctuations in oestrogen and progesterone can strongly influence cognitive processes. Many women notice these “foggy shifts” particularly in the second half of the cycle or during the perimenopause.

  • Chronic stress: A permanently elevated cortisol level has a negative effect on memory and thinking ability. Our brain cannot regenerate well when we are working in continuous mode.

  • Poor sleep: no mental clarity without deep sleep. Sleep problems – whether sleeping through the night or falling asleep – are one of the biggest factors in brain fog.

  • Nutrient deficiencies: If the body lacks essential nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins, iron or magnesium, the ability to think can suffer.

  • Sugar consumption & processed foods: These promote inflammation in the body and affect blood sugar levels – both of which can impair your mental performance.
