Esseterre – Bulgaria

What I was able to experience in Bulgaria can hardly be put into words. And yet I would like to try – because it was an experience that took my understanding of quality, connection and meaning in business to a whole new level.

In June 2025, I visited Esseterre, one of dōTERRA’s distilleries. Situated on the picturesque Black Sea coast of Bulgaria, surrounded by endless fields where plants such as lemon balm, lavender, rose, tarragon and Roman chamomile are cultivated, this is where what can later enrich our lives in small bottles is created: pure essential oils.

But there is more to every drop than meets the eye. Distillation – of lemon balm, for example, one of the most precious oils of all – is extremely complex. Huge quantities of plant material are needed to produce just 5 ml of pure oil. Melissa is distilled on the same day it is harvested, as its active ingredient content is very volatile. Every step counts, every minute determines the quality.

Esseterre works with state-of-the-art technology, but above all with a great deal of humanity, dedication and attentiveness . That was palpable. In every conversation, every smile, every glance at the steaming stills.

I had inspiring conversations, exchanged ideas with women from all over the world, laughed, marveled – and once again felt:
