Nature meets law

Counterproductive legal situation

Why people are often reluctant to talk about essential oils in public

A look behind the scenes of laws, quality and responsibility

For many people, essential oils have long been more than just a pleasant fragrance. They are used in everyday life to support well-being, relaxation, energy, skin care or in sleep rituals. But as soon as it comes to the effects or health support, one question arises: why do we hear so little concrete information – especially from experts or in the social media?

Here I would like to explain why it is often only allowed to talk about essential oils very carefully in public – and what this has to do with responsibility, the legal framework and quality.

1. promises of cure are strictly regulated by law

In Germany (and many other countries), only approved medicines may be advertised as having a medicinal effect.
This means that even if someone has had very positive experiences with a certain oil – for example, for tension headaches or sleep problems – this must not be communicated publicly as “effective against XY”, because otherwise it could be seen as a promise of a cure.

Instead, terms such as “supportive”, “balancing” or “beneficial” are used in order to remain compliant. This caution is required by law, even if it can sometimes seem frustrating – especially for people who want to speak authentically about their experiences.

2. natural products – but not automatically approved

Essential oils are natural products. However, this does not mean that they are automatically considered “harmless” or “approval-free”.
Obtaining approval as a medicinal product is complex and expensive – and is deliberately not sought by most nature-based companies because the focus is more on prevention and lifestyle.

Even scientific studies – as numerous as they now are – are usually not sufficient to obtain medical approval. This is why all-natural products are in a legal gray area when it comes to health claims.

3. quality is crucial – but difficult to compare

Another issue is the varying quality of essential oils on the market. Many people already had an oil at home – but not every oil is the same.
Important differences exist, for example, in:

  • Purity & origin
  • Distillation process
  • Proof of ingredients
  • Residues & pollutants
  • Transparency in production

With its CPTG® quality seal (Certified Pure Tested Grade), dōTERRA has set its own, strictly tested standards – including independent laboratory tests and full traceability.

This makes a big difference – because a uniform effect is only possible with consistently high quality.

4. protection against incorrect use and self-treatment

Another reason for the restrictions: Even natural products can be used incorrectly.
Some oils should not be applied pure to the skin, others should not be used internally – and some applications are not suitable for pregnant women or children.

That’s why education and individual advice are so important.
This is precisely why many reputable coaches, advisors and health practitioners also offer personal consultations or accompanied starter packages – instead of simply recommending “go for it”.

5. it’s also about the system – and about responsibility

Many people increasingly feel the desire to support their health proactively and naturally.
This does not mean replacing medical help – but often supplementing it. And that doesn’t fit into every economic model.

Health awareness and personal responsibility are on the rise – even in the business sector.
Those who understand how the body, hormones, emotions and lifestyle are interlinked are often looking for natural, sustainable and compatible solutions.

My conclusion

Essential oils have enormous potential – as countless testimonials and studies show.
But precisely because they are so powerful, responsible use and individual advice are crucial.
